"Just Go And Do It",  - Bath Resurfacing.

Bath resurfacing was a new service that came on the scene in Ireland more than twenty years ago. I first saw it done in the USA and thought that this would work in Ireland. Thinking that with nobody else but yourself doing it the job, how could you go wrong. I went to the resurfacing academy headquarters were I was accepted in up state New York. I was there for two days being shown how the system worked. There was also some brainwashing on how successful you were going to be after the two days of training. I was ready to take on the bath resurfacing franchise.

I would become a bath doctor, once I had paid over $200,000 or I could have got the master franchise for Ireland, where I could sell off area franchises myself for about $2 million. It was not the sort of money that I had in mind but I had seen how the system worked, so I reckoned I could do it by myself and that I did.

I returned to Ireland and put an advert in the paper to see if I would get any response, fortunately, the response was good and it was time to get the business up and running. I went looking for a ceramic paint and I found it after the long search. This particular paint was available in any color as long as it was white. I then bought a big air compressor and some top quality spray equipment. Money was no object since I had just saved $200,000 on not buying the franchise.

Next was the cleaning fluid. This proved hard to get and also there was some restrictions in buying it. Hydro fluoride acid is very dangerous and that was the chemical needed to clean the baths. Anyway, I got going on the work, I probably did not comply with all the health and safety regulations since after a while I noticed some burns and blisters appeared on my hand and face. I needed to start taking care of myself and but I soldiered on.

The technical word for the cleaning of the bath surface was etching. This would then leave the bath prepared for spraying. I was thinking that spraying with all this good equipment was going to be a piece of cake, or was it. My big compressor was too big for most houses and you would need to plug it into the national electricity grid to get it started. A smaller compressor worked much better.

Most of the baths that were to be sprayed were removed from the bathroom as the room was being re-modeled. This made it easy as I didn’t have to cover up everything else in the room to save it from been accidentally sprayed. The system now seemed to be going well, the spraying equipment was much better and the spraying itself looked easy. You needed to have some idea of what you were doing or else you’d finish up with a few tram lines that otherwise you might not want to have.

Any color you liked, as long as it was white. Next came an order that required an immediate expansion of the operation. This person needed her toilet, hand basin and bath to be resurfaced. Not a problem, the confidence was high, however, there was a small problem with the color. It was not white that she was looking for but blue. Now, blue ceramic paint was not available and after a long unsuccessful search, I decided to use a blue enamel paint and just spray it on the surfaces.

Now this would be something new, it would have been first spray job indoors and maybe a new beginning in paint technology. Well, some changes were being made in the bathroom that was not entirely intended. Some of the spray paint was getting onto places that it should not be going and the bathroom was turning out bluer than expected. The new paint was not working as good as the white ceramic but I soldiered on. Some designs were appearing that was not intended, tram lines and waves and those were not included in the price.

Included in the American franchise price was a large heater. This was used to help in the drying of the paint, I think the term they called it was baking. Anyway, I did not have this dryer but I used a hair dryer instead which worked almost as good. I got the job completed and left the usual instructions to not use bath for 48 hours, to make sure that the paint would be dry.

Well after the day or two had passed, the people of the house wanted to have a bath. A draw must have been made to see who would be first in the new bath, of course, the woman of the house got the nomination. As she sat in the bath, she could see a lot more blue than was needed. Bits of spray were all over the place but there was a bigger shock in store for her.

When she stepped out of the bath, her legs and rear end were colored blue. Unfortunately, the paint had not dried properly so now you had a half blue woman and a half blue bath. The bathroom was eventually returned to the white color.
